Al-Risalah al-Ladunniyyah (الرسالة اللدنية) is a classical treatise traditionally attributed to Imam al-Ghazali on the nature of divinely bestowed knowledge (ilm ladunni). It explains the distinction between acquired learning and spiritual inspiration, and the role of soul purification in receiving divine insight, while affirming its harmony with the Qur’an, Sunnah, and Sacred Law.

Al-Risalah al-Ladunniyyah (الرسالة اللدنية) is a celebrated classical treatise traditionally attributed to Hujjat al-Islam, Imam Abu Hamid al-Ghazali (d. 505 AH / 1111 CE). Its title may be translated as "The Treatise on Divinely Bestowed Knowledge." The term ladunni is derived from the Qur'anic expression 'allamnahu min ladunna 'ilman ("We taught him knowledge from Our Presence") in the account of Prophet Musa and al-Khidr (peace be upon them) in Surah al-Kahf (18:65).

The treatise explores one of the most profound subjects in Islamic spirituality: the nature of knowledge, the capacities of the human soul, and the relationship between acquired learning (al-'ilm al-kasbi) and divinely bestowed knowledge (al-'ilm al-ladunni). Imam al-Ghazali explains that the human soul, when purified through sincere worship and spiritual discipline, becomes receptive to divine illumination, much as a polished mirror reflects light with clarity.

A central theme of the work is the distinction between acquired knowledge and inspired knowledge. Acquired knowledge is obtained through study, instruction, reflection, and rational inquiry. Inspired knowledge, by contrast, is a divine gift placed directly into the hearts of Allah's righteous servants without ordinary human instruction. While prophetic revelation (wahy) is unique to the prophets, righteous believers may receive inspiration (ilham) according to their spiritual state. Al-Ghazali emphasizes that such inspiration never contradicts the Qur'an, the Sunnah, or the Sacred Law; rather, it is the spiritual fruit of sincere adherence to them. In this vision, reason, revelation, and spiritual insight work together harmoniously rather than in opposition.

The treatise also outlines the means by which a believer prepares the heart to receive divine illumination. Foremost among these are purification of the soul (tazkiyah), freeing the heart from pride, envy, ostentation, and excessive attachment to worldly pursuits, together with constant remembrance of Allah (dhikr), contemplation (tafakkur), and steadfast obedience. Although divine inspiration remains purely a gift from Allah, Al-Risalah al-Ladunniyyah teaches that sincere spiritual striving prepares the heart to receive His guidance.

Concise yet profound, this treatise remains one of the classical works of Islamic spirituality, offering readers a thoughtful exploration of the harmony between sacred knowledge, intellectual inquiry, and spiritual purification.
