Afdal al-Salawat 'ala Sayyid al-Sadat أفضل الصلوات على سيد السادات

Afdal al-Salawat 'ala Sayyid al-Sadat (أفضل الصلوات على سيد السادات) ("The Best Prayers upon the Master of Masters ") is one of the most famous and highly regarded compilations of prayers (Salawat / Durood) upon the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. It was authored by the renowned Sunni jurist, judge, poet, and scholar Imam Yusuf bin Isma’il al-Nabhani (often referred to by his kunya Abi al-Mahasin, 1265–1350 AH / 1849–1932 CE) from Palestine.

Overview of the Book

Afdal al-Salawat 'ala Sayyid al-Sadat is a spiritual manual designed to help Muslims increase their love for and connection to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

The core objective of the book is to compile the most beautiful, spiritually potent, and historically significant formulas of sending peace and blessings (Salawat) upon the Prophet ﷺ. Rather than writing only his own prayers, Imam al-Nabhani gathered formulas from three major categories:

1. The Sunnah & Companion Narrations (Al-Ma’thurat): Prayers transmitted directly from the Prophet ﷺ or taught by his noble Companions (Sahabah) and the Successors (Tabi’un).

2. The Great Jurists & Hadith Scholars: Formulas written or regularly recited by foundational scholars of Islam, such as Imam al-Shafi’i, Imam al-Ghazali, and others.

3. The Spiritual Masters (Awliya and Sufis): Famous prayers composed by renowned spiritual giants, such as Sheikh Abdul Qadir al-Jilani, Imam Ahmad al-Rifa’i, Imam Abul Hasan al-Shadhili, and Imam al-Nawawi.

Imam al-Nabhani begins the book with a comprehensive introduction detailing the Quranic commands and Prophetic traditions concerning Salawat. He highlights its spiritual benefits, its role in purifying the heart, easing worldly distress, and gaining the intercession (Shafa’ah) of the Prophet ﷺ on the Day of Judgment. The book compiles seventy unique formulas, providing the background, benefits, and scholarly commentary for many.  It ahs alo sseven poems of praise for the Prophet ﷺ.

The Author: Imam Yusuf al-Nabhani

Imam Yusuf al-Nabhani was a highly accomplished scholar of the late Ottoman era. He served as a judge (Qadi) in several regions, including Beirut, Jerusalem, and Mosul. He was a master of Shafi’i jurisprudence, a traditional theologian, and a prominent spiritual figure who dedicated a vast portion of his literary career to expressing love for the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, defending his status, and compiling prophetic traditions and praises.

Imam al-Nabhani does not merely list the text;for many he explains why it is considered among the “best” (Afdal). He cites previous classical authorities, explaining the spiritual secrets, linguistic beauty, and theological soundness of each phrase. 

The book is widely accepted and beloved across the traditional Muslim world, particularly within schools of spiritual purification (Tazkiyah or Tasawwuf). Scholars recommend it as a daily devotional manual for students of knowledge and laypeople alike who wish to establish a consistent, meaningful routine of sending blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ.
