Kitab al-Tawhid by Imam al-Maturidi is not merely a statement of belief, but an intellectual masterpiece that defended orthodox Sunni theology using the tools of logic and rational inquiry. It remains a monumental testament to the intellectual depth of Islamic scholastic theology (Kalam).

Kitab al-Tawhid is the foundational theological work of Abu Mansur al-Maturidi and one of the most important texts in the Sunni theological tradition. In this landmark treatise, al-Maturidi systematically presents the principles of faith, combining rational inquiry with scriptural evidence to establish the doctrines of Islamic belief.

The work addresses the existence and oneness of Allah, divine attributes, prophethood, human responsibility, and predestination, major sins, and philosophical questions about the nature of iman, while engaging critically with various theological and philosophical trends of its time. Renowned for its depth and intellectual rigor, Kitab al-Tawhid remains a central reference for the study of Maturidi theology and the broader tradition of Sunni creed.

Detailed Introduction

كتاب التوحيد (Kitab al-Tawhid) by Imam Abu Mansur al-Maturidi (d. 333 AH / 944 CE) is one of the most foundational and historic  works in the history of Islamic theology (Kalam). Along with the works of Imam Abu al-Hasan al-Ash’ari, it forms the bedrock of Sunni orthodox creed (Ahl al-Sunnah wal-Jama’ah), specifically the Maturidi school of thought, which is widely followed across Central Asia, Turkey, the Indian subcontinent, and parts of the Levant.

Below is a detailed description of the book, its methodology, content, and historical significance:

1. Author and Historical Context

The book was written by Imam Abu Mansur Muhammad bin Muhammad al-Maturidi, born in Maturid (near Samarkand, in modern-day Uzbekistan). He lived during the Golden Age of Islamic jurisprudence and theology in Transoxiana (Mawara’an-Nahr). The intellectual landscape of his era was highly polarized. On one hand, the extreme rationalists (such as the Mu’tazilah) over-relied on human reason to the point of denying or metaphorically reinterpreting many established divine attributes. On the other hand, certain literalists fell into anthropomorphism (Tashbih or Tajsim). Imam al-Maturidi wrote Kitab al-Tawhid to articulate a balanced, orthodox Sunni creed that harmonizes divine revelation (Sama’ / Naql) with sound human reason ('Aql).

2. Methodological Approach

The methodology of Kitab al-Tawhid is highly sophisticated and heavily reliant on rigorous logical argumentation. Imam al-Maturidi established the following principles in his work:

The Epistemology of Knowledge: The book famously begins with a chapter on the sources of knowledge, establishing that human knowledge is acquired through three primary means: a) Healthy Senses (Al-A’yan / Al-Hawas al-Salimah). b) Sound Reason (Al-'Aql). c) Truthful Reports (Al-Khabar al-Sadiq), which includes the Quran, established Sunnah, and historical consensus.

Rational Defense of Faith: Unlike some earlier traditionalist works that relied solely on quoting scriptural texts, al-Maturidi uses philosophical and logical proofs to refute heretical groups, atheists, dualists (like the Manichaeans), and the Mu’tazilah.

The Concept of Wisdom (Hikmah): A core theme in al-Maturidi’s theology is that Allah is Al-Hakim (The All-Wise). He argues that Allah’s actions are always purposeful and contain inherent wisdom, rejecting both the Mu’tazilite view (that Allah is legally “obligated” to do what is best for creation) and the extreme view that Allah’s actions are completely arbitrary and devoid of ultimate purpose.

3. Key Theological Themes in the Book

The Createdness of the Universe (Huduth al-Ajsam): Al-Maturidi argues that the universe is composed of substances and accidents, which are subject to change. Since they change, they must have a beginning, requiring a necessary, eternal, and uncreated Creator (Wajib al-Wujud).

The Divine Attributes (Al-Sifat): He affirms the eternal attributes of Allah (such as Knowledge, Power, Will, Hearing, and Seeing) as being distinct from His Essence yet co-eternal with Him.

Unlike the Ash’ari school of his time, al-Maturidi uniquely argued for the eternity of the Attributes of Action (Sifat al-Fi’l), such as creating (Takhliq) and sustaining (Tarziq), collectively categorized under the eternal attribute of Takwin (Bringing into existence).

Anthropomorphic Verses: In dealing with verses describing Allah with terms like “Hand” (Yad) or “Establishing Himself on the Throne” (Istiwa’), he adopts a position of Tafwid (consigning the exact modality and meaning to Allah) while completely negating any physical resemblance to creation (Tanzih), and occasionally utilizes Ta’wil (metaphorical interpretation) when necessary to avoid misunderstandings.

Human Agency and Predestination (Al-Qadar & Kasb): He addresses the balance between divine decree and human free will. He introduces the concept of Kasb (acquisition), stating that Allah is the Creator of human actions, but humans possess a choice and free will (Ikhtiyar), making them morally responsible for their deeds.

Faith (Iman): He defines Iman as internal conviction and affirmation of the heart (Tasdiq), with verbal confession (Iqrar) being a necessary condition for its worldly application. He argues that Iman does not increase or decrease in its essence, though it can increase in strength and light through good deeds.

4. Historical Significance and Editing

For centuries, Kitab al-Tawhid was preserved in rare manuscripts and was largely studied indirectly through its famous commentaries and summaries—such as Tabsirat al-Adillah by Imam al-Nasafi (d. 508 AH) and Sharh al-'Aqa’id al-Nasafiyyah by Imam al-Taftazani (d. 792 AH).

The book was famously recovered and edited in the 20th century by the renowned Turkish scholar Dr. Fathalla Kholeif (published in Beirut, 1970). It contained numerous typographical errors and reading mistakes due to the difficulty of the unique manuscript. Prof. Dr. Bekir Topaloğlu (بكر توبال أوغلي)  and Dr. Muhammed Aruçi (محمد آروتشي) meticulously re-edited the manuscript and published the definitive, highly precise critical edition of Kitab al-Tawhid in 2002 (published by the Center for Islamic Studies - İSAM in Turkey). They also translated the book into Turkish, making a monumental contribution to Maturidi studies.
