Mizan al-Amal (ميزان العمل, The Criterion of Action) is one of the most influential works on Islamic ethics and spirituality by Imam Abu Hamid al-Ghazali (d. 505 AH / 1111 CE). In this profound masterpiece, al-Ghazali demonstrates that true success in this world and the Hereafter depends on balancing knowledge ('ilm) with righteous action ('amal). He explains that knowledge without practice is fruitless, while action without sound knowledge is misguided. Imam al-Ghazali conceptualized two works as a complementary pair representing the dual wings of human perfection: theory and practice.
Ma’yar al-Ilm (معيار العلم - “The Standard of Knowledge”): Focuses on logic, epistemology, and intellectual reasoning to safeguard the mind from theoretical errors.
Mizan al-Amal (ميزان العمل - “The Criterion of Action”): Focuses on ethics, psychology, and spiritual practice to safeguard the soul from moral and behavioral errors.
In the introduction of Mizan al-Amal, al-Ghazali explicitly links the two, explaining that while Ma’yar al-Ilm clarifies the path of knowledge, Mizan al-Amal details the path of action, as eternal bliss is only achieved by mastering both.
Written during a pivotal stage in Imam al-Ghazali's life, Mizan al-Amal serves as an important precursor to his monumental Ihya 'Ulum al-Din. Many of the ethical principles and spiritual insights later developed in the Ihya are introduced here in a concise and systematic manner, making it an excellent gateway to al-Ghazali's thought.
