Al-Hibāt al-Rabbāniyyah ʿalā al-Qawāʿid al-Manṭiqiyyah Sharḥ al-Risālah al-Shamsiyyah
(الهبات الربانية في شرح الرسالة الشمسية)
Overview & Scholastic Significance
Al-Hibāt al-Rabbāniyyah is a significant, previously unpublished commentary on al-Risālah al-Shamsiyyah fī al-Qawāʿid al-Manṭiqiyyah, the celebrated primer on formal logic by Najm al-Dīn al-Kātibī al-Qazwīnī (d. 675 AH). Al-Shamsiyyah became one of the most influential logic texts in the traditional Islamic curriculum and was studied through numerous commentaries and ḥawāshī, most famously those of Quṭb al-Dīn al-Rāzī (d. 766 AH).
This work by Shaykh Aḥmad al-Tirmānīnī al-Ḥalabī (d. 1293 AH), a renowned scholar and teacher of Aleppo, represents one of the valuable commentaries that remained in manuscript form. Known for his exceptional teaching ability and clarity of expression, al-Tirmānīnī composed explanations to make difficult scholarly texts accessible to students while also addressing subtle points of benefit to advanced readers.
Written in the thirteenth century AH, Al-Hibāt al-Rabbāniyyah benefits from centuries of accumulated scholarship on al-Shamsiyyah. The author brings together the taḥqīqāt (critical investigations), corrections, and selected insights of later commentators and glossators, resulting in a rich and self-contained treatment of the subject.
Features of This Critical Edition
This first printed edition, prepared from three rare manuscripts, makes this previously unpublished work accessible to students and researchers for the first time. The edition includes:
- Diagrams and tables (rusūm wa-jadāwil) to clarify logical concepts and facilitate memorization.
- Interdisciplinary discussions touching upon Arabic grammar, rhetoric, and linguistic analysis where relevant to the logical discussion.
- Clear separation of the matn and sharḥ. Although al-Tirmānīnī originally composed a blended commentary (sharḥ mazjī), the editor has presented the original text of al-Risālah al-Shamsiyyah in distinct framed sections, enabling students to study the foundational text separately before engaging with its detailed explanation.
The Place of Logic in Islamic Scholarship
Formal logic (ʿIlm al-Manṭiq) became an important instrumental discipline (ʿilm ālah) in the Sunni scholarly tradition, particularly following the influential engagement of Imam al-Ghazālī (d. 505 AH) with the rational sciences. It was employed as a tool for disciplined reasoning, the formulation of arguments in Uṣūl al-Fiqh, and the systematic presentation of theological proofs in ʿIlm al-Kalām.
Al-Hibāt al-Rabbāniyyah therefore represents not merely another commentary on al-Shamsiyyah, but a valuable contribution to the pedagogical heritage of the Islamic rational sciences (al-ʿUlūm al-ʿAqliyyah), bringing a previously inaccessible layer of later Ottoman-era logical scholarship into print.
