Al-Irshad al-Mubin Sharh al-Murshid al-Muin is a clear commentary on Imam Ibn 'Ashir's celebrated poem, explaining Ash'ari creed and the essential rulings of Maliki worship, including purification, prayer, zakat, fasting, and Hajj.

Al-Irshad al-Mubin Sharh al-Murshid al-Muin (الإرشاد المبين شرح المرشد المعين) is an important commentary on the celebrated didactic poem Al-Murshid al-Mu'in 'ala al-Daruri min 'Ulum al-Din (المرشد المعين على الضروري من علوم الدين), authored by the renowned North African Maliki scholar Imam 'Abd al-Wahid ibn 'Ashir (d. 1040 AH / 1631 CE).

About the Original Text

Commonly known as Matn Ibn 'Ashir, Al-Murshid al-Mu'in is one of the most widely studied foundational texts in the traditional Maliki curriculum throughout North and West Africa. Written in concise and memorable verse, it presents the essential teachings of Islam through three principal subjects:

• Creed ('Aqidah): The foundational beliefs of Islam according to the Ash'ari school of theology.

• Jurisprudence (Fiqh): The essential rulings of worship according to the Maliki school, including purification, prayer, zakat, fasting, and Hajj.

• Ihsan: A brief treatment of spiritual and ethical refinement based upon the principles of Imam al-Junayd al-Baghdadi.

About Al-Irshad al-Mubin

Al-Irshad al-Mubin expands upon the concise verses of Ibn 'Ashir and presents their meanings in a clear and structured manner. The commentary explains the vocabulary, grammatical constructions, and intended meanings of the poem while providing the theological and legal context necessary for a deeper understanding of the text.

The greater part of the work is devoted to the essential principles of Islamic creed and the detailed rulings of Maliki worship. It explains the conditions, obligations, recommended acts, and invalidating factors related to purification, prayer, zakat, fasting, and Hajj, while supporting these teachings with evidence from the Quran and Sunnah.

The subject of ihsan is included as part of the original poem's comprehensive presentation of religion, but it receives only a brief treatment of approximately one page in this commentary. Accordingly, the work should be understood primarily as a commentary on Ash'ari creed and the foundational rulings of Maliki jurisprudence rather than as an extensive manual of tasawwuf or spiritual purification.

Scholarly Significance

Commentaries on Matn Ibn 'Ashir have long served as important instructional texts in traditional zawayas, madrasas, and centers of learning throughout the Maghreb, including Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Mauritania, and West Africa. They enable students to progress from memorizing the foundational poem to developing a sound understanding of its theological and legal teachings.

Al-Irshad al-Mubin is a valuable resource for students of Maliki fiqh and Ash'ari theology. Its clear explanation of the foundational beliefs and essential acts of worship makes it a useful guide for students studying the traditional North and West African Islamic curriculum.
