Sharh al-Jami‘ al-Saghir (2-Volume Set)
(شرح الجامع الصغير — Commentary on Imam al-Shaybani’s Al-Jami‘ al-Saghir)

Author: Imam Zayn al-Din Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Umar al-Hanafi al-‘Attabi (d. 586 AH / 1190 CE)

Tahqiq: Dr. ‘Umar Mustafa Ahmad Ibrahim (د. عمر مصطفى أحمد إبراهيم)

Sharh al-Jami‘ al-Saghir is an important classical commentary on Al-Jami‘ al-Saghir, one of the foundational works of Hanafi jurisprudence composed by Imam Muhammad ibn al-Hasan al-Shaybani (d. 189 AH), the foremost student of Imam Abu Hanifah.

Al-Jami‘ al-Saghir is one of the texts transmitted through the Zahir al-Riwayah, the principal body of authoritative legal transmissions of the Hanafi school. Its concise formulation of Hanafi rulings made it an important subject of study and commentary among later jurists.

In this substantial commentary, Imam al-‘Attabi explains the concise legal expressions of al-Shaybani’s text, clarifies difficult juristic passages, expands upon the underlying legal principles, and discusses the reasoning and evidences relevant to the rulings. The work therefore provides valuable insight into the development and transmission of Hanafi jurisprudence in the classical period.
