Ma'rudat Abi al-Su'ud Muhammad ibn Mustafa al-'Imadi معروضات أبي السعود محمد بن مصطفى العمادي
Maʿrūḍāt of Abū al-Suʿūd Muḥammad ibn Muṣṭafā al-ʿImādī
معروضات أبي السعود محمد بن مصطفى العمادي
Maʿrūḍāt is a collection of 60 legal submissions attributed to Abū al-Suʿūd Efendi (d. 982 AH / 1574 CE), the renowned Ottoman Shaykh al-Islām and Ḥanafī jurist. These submissions address a wide range of legal matters, including faith, prayer, trade, marriage, divorce, slavery, qiṣāṣ, awqāf, judicial proceedings, claims, and testimony.
Abū al-Suʿūd served as Shaykh al-Islām for nearly three decades during the reigns of Sultan Sulaymān the Magnificent and Sultan Selim II. The Maʿrūḍāt reflects his role in addressing legal questions arising within the Ottoman judicial and administrative system and in applying Ḥanafī jurisprudence to contemporary circumstances.
The work is particularly valuable for the study of Ottoman legal history, Ḥanafī jurisprudence, and the relationship between Islamic law and Ottoman judicial practice.
