Hilyat al-Awliya’ wa Tabaqat al-Asfiya’ (The Adornment of the Saints and the Generations of the Pure) is one of the most famous and massive encyclopedic works of Islamic spirituality, biography, and Hadith in the Sunni tradition.

Written by the great scholar and master of Hadith, Imam Abu Nu’aym al-Isfahani (d. 430 AH / 1038 CE), this book serves as a historical bridge connecting early Islamic piety, asceticism (Zuhd), and what would later be formally defined as Tazkiyah (purification of the soul) or Sufism.

The Author: Imam Abu Nu’aym al-Isfahani

Ahmad ibn Abdillah ibn Ahmad al-Isfahani, popularly known as Imam Abu Nu’aym, was an illustrious Persian Sunni scholar, traditionist (Muhaddith), and historian. He belonged to a prestigious scholarly lineage in Isfahan. He traveled extensively throughout the Islamic world to collect Hadith and studied under some of the greatest minds of his era. He is highly revered by later master scholars such as Imam al-Dhahabi and Ibn Kathir for his incredible memory, vast chains of narration, and contribution to preserving Islamic history.

The Nature and Scope of the Book

The literal translation of the title is “The Adornment of the Saints and the Generations of the Pure.” The core objective of the work is to document the lives, sayings, teachings, and spiritual states of the early righteous figures of Islam.

Imam Abu Nu’aym wrote this book during a time when some people had begun to misinterpret or abuse the concepts of spiritual closeness to Allah (Wilayah). Through this book, he aimed to prove that true spiritual sainthood (Wilayah) and purification are completely inseparable from strict adherence to the Quran, the Sunnah, and the practices of the early generations (the Salaf).

The book is organized chronologically, beginning with the earliest generations closest to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and moving forward through the history of Islamic piety. It opens with the Rightly Guided Caliphs, Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, and Ali, presenting them as the foremost models of leadership and spiritual excellence. It then moves to the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ, with special focus on the ascetic Ahl al-Suffah. 

Next are the Successors (Tabi‘un), including Hasan al-Basri, Uwais al-Qarani, and Sa‘id ibn al-Musayyib, followed by the next generation of ascetics such as Ibrahim ibn Adham, Fudayl ibn ‘Iyad, and Sufyan al-Thawri.

The work then includes the four great Sunni Imams, Abu Hanifa, Malik, al-Shafi‘i, and Ahmad ibn Hanbal, highlighting their piety, fear of Allah, and ascetic character alongside their mastery of Islamic law. It continues beyond them, documenting later saints and righteous figures in a continuous historical sequence, ultimately comprising 697 entries in total.

Significance in the Science of Hadith

Hilyat al-Awliya’ is not merely a book of spiritual stories or moral anecdotes; it is also a vital reference book for Hadith scholars.

Because Imam Abu Nu’aym was a master of Hadith, he did not simply narrate stories of the righteous. Instead, for nearly every quote, story, and prophetic tradition mentioned in the book, he provided a complete, unbroken chain of narration (Isnad) back to the speaker.

Because of this, the book contains thousands of rare narrations, prophetic Hadiths, and statements of the Salaf that are not found in other books. However, because it is an encyclopedic work of history, it contains a mixture of authentic (Sahih), good (Hasan), and weak (Da’if) narrations, which Hadith scholars have analyzed over the centuries.
