Draws upon Mamluk and Ottoman sources, including manuscripts, sijill (court) archives, inscriptions, travelogues, and biographies. It discusses the instruments (sundials/ mizwalah), legal systems, and time keepers (muwaqqit) for determining prayer times. It explains the historic arrangements for the prayer calls, at separate locations in the complex (with pictures), and on special occasions, such as Ramadan. Also lists the known mu’adhhins from historical sources, including the prominent Ghudayya family in Ottoman times, and discusses other functions, such as sending salawat or reciting the Qur’an. Also discusses the adhan at other historic masjids in Jerusalem, outside al-Aqsa.
