Mishkāt al-Maṣābīḥ is a comprehensive collection of ḥadīth, compiled in the 8th century AH, which covers nearly all major aspects of Islamic belief, jurisprudence (fiqh), and ethics and virtues. It is based on, and significantly expands upon, Imām al-Baghawī’s Maṣābīḥ al-Sunnah, compiled in the 6th century AH.
The work is widely taught to students of ḥadīth across the world, particularly in the madrasahs of the Indian subcontinent, South Africa, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Mishkāt al-Maṣābīḥ is often studied as an introduction before the al-Kutub al-Sittah (the Six Canonical Books).
This introduction is intended for students and provides an overview of the book’s history, distinguishing features, and the various translations and commentaries available in different languages.
