Sunan al-Daraqutni (Resalah) سنن الدارقطني

Sunan al-Daraqutni (سنن الدارقطني), by the renowned hadith master Imam ʿAli ibn ʿUmar al-Daraqutni (d. 385 AH), is a major classical source for ahadith al-ahkam, hadith criticism, and the study of hidden defects (ʿilal) and narrator evaluation (jarh wa-taʿdil).

The Nature and Purpose of Sunan al-Daraqutni

Unlike comprehensive hadith compilations (Jawamiʿ) whose primary purpose is to collect authentic narrations across the various recognized subjects of hadith, Sunan al-Daraqutni focuses on narrations relevant to Islamic law and critically examines their chains, variants, hidden defects (ʿilal), and narrators.

The Sunan is accompanied by Al-Taʿliq al-Mughni, a valuable marginal commentary by Shaykh Shams al-Haqq al-ʿAzimabadi (d. 1349 AH), the eminent Indian hadith scholar best known for ʿAwn al-Maʿbud, his celebrated commentary on Sunan Abi Dawud.

The commentary clarifies difficult terminology and narrator biographies, evaluates chains and narrations, and discusses their relevant juristic implications, making it a useful complement to al-Daraqutni’s critical treatment of the hadith evidence.
