Mukhtasar al-Ma'ani Sharh Talkhis al-Miftah مختصر المعاني شرح تلخيص المفتاح
Mukhtasar al-Ma'ani (مختصر المعاني) is one of the most celebrated and authoritative textbooks in the science of Arabic rhetoric (balaghah). Authored by the eminent scholar Imam Sa'd al-Din al-Taftazani (d. 792 AH), it is a masterful commentary on Talkhis al-Miftah by Imam Jalal al-Din al-Qazwini (d. 739 AH), itself the definitive abridgment of the rhetoric section of Imam al-Sakkaki's monumental Miftah al-'Ulum.
Although described as a "concise" commentary, Mukhtasar al-Ma'ani is a rich and sophisticated work that has served for centuries as a standard text in madrasas and Islamic universities throughout the Muslim world. It systematically covers the three branches of classical Arabic rhetoric: 'Ilm al-Ma'ani (semantics and contextual expression), 'Ilm al-Bayan (figurative language and modes of expression), and 'Ilm al-Badi' (rhetorical embellishment), equipping students with the tools to appreciate the linguistic eloquence of the Qur'an, Hadith, and classical Arabic literature.
This critically edited edition has been prepared through the comparison of reliable manuscripts to establish an accurate text. Qur'anic verses, hadiths, and poetic citations have been carefully verified and sourced, while explanatory annotations clarify difficult linguistic discussions and technical terminology. The edition also features vocalization of challenging passages, modern paragraphing, and comprehensive indexes, making this enduring classic more accessible to today's students and researchers while preserving its scholarly integrity.
