Asna al-Matalib al-Nahwiyya by Dr. Jihad Uzal is a modern super-commentary on Mulla 'Isamuddin's Sharh al-'Awamil, explaining Imam al-Birkawi's classical Arabic grammar text with detailed I'rab, clear explanations, and a student-friendly approach to Nahw and grammatical analysis.

Asna al-Matalib al-Nahwiyya 'ala Sharh al-'Awamil al-Barkawiyya (أسنى المطالب النحوية على شرح العوامل البركوية) by Dr. Jihad Uzal is a contemporary scholarly guide to one of the most influential texts in traditional Arabic grammar (Nahw). It combines the precision of the classical Ottoman madrasa curriculum with the clarity of modern academic presentation.

The Original Text

The foundational text, Al-'Awamil, was authored by the eminent Ottoman scholar Imam Muhammad ibn Pir 'Ali al-Birkawi (also known as Imam Birgivi, d. 981 AH / 1573 CE), a distinguished Hanafi jurist, theologian, grammarian, and author of the celebrated Al-Tariqah al-Muhammadiyyah. Modeled after Imam 'Abd al-Qahir al-Jurjani's Al-'Awamil al-Mi'ah, Al-'Awamil presents the theory of grammatical governing agents ('awamil), explaining how verbs, particles, and nouns determine the grammatical case endings (nominative, accusative, genitive, and jussive) of the words that follow. It has remained a cornerstone of traditional Arabic grammar instruction for centuries. Both of these can be seen here

The Commentary

The commentary (Sharh) was written by the remarkable scholar Mulla 'Isamuddin al-As'ardi (d. 1311 AH / 1893 CE). Despite passing away at approximately twenty years of age, he produced a commentary of extraordinary depth, precision, and pedagogical excellence. His mastery of the grammatical tradition, including the works of Ibn Hisham, Ibn Aqil, and al-Taftazani, enabled him to clarify complex linguistic discussions with exceptional clarity. Rather than merely compiling earlier opinions, he synthesized intricate grammatical debates into an organized and accessible teaching text.

The quality of Sharh al-'Awamil was immediately recognized by senior scholars, who adopted it into the traditional madrasa curriculum throughout Turkey, Iraq, and the Levant. In recognition of his remarkable scholarship, he became widely honored with the titles Mulla and Allama, reflecting the maturity and brilliance of a work far beyond the years of its young author.

The Super Commentary

Dr. Jihad Uzel expands upon this legacy through a clear and systematic explanation of the governing agents, accompanied by detailed grammatical analysis (I'rab), simplified explanations of classical terminology, and a student-friendly layout. While preserving the methodology of the Basran and Kufan grammatical schools, the book makes complex concepts accessible to today's learners.

Who is This Book For?

This work is an outstanding resource for intermediate and advanced students seeking to master Nahw, syntactic analysis, and the classical theory of grammatical governing agents. It is especially suited for students who have already learned the fundamentals of Arabic grammar and wish to understand how grammatical agents interact with words, how syntax affects meaning, and the linguistic reasoning underlying the rules of classical Arabic.
