Tafsir Surat al-Fatiha li-Ibn 'Ajiba تفسير سورة الفاتحة لابن عجيبة

This is the  distinguished collection of commentaries on Surat al-Fatiha by the renowned Moroccan Sufi scholar, jurist, and exegete Shaykh Ahmad ibn ʿAjiba al-Hasani (d. 1224 AH / 1809 CE), best known for his landmark synthesis of exoteric and spiritual tafsir, Al-Bahr al-Madid fi Tafsir al-Qur’an al-Majid.

Ibn ʿAjiba’s Works on Surat al-Fatiha

Shaykh Ibn ʿAjiba composed three dedicated commentaries on Surat al-Fatiha, representing distinct levels of depth and scholarly treatment:

1. The Short Commentary (Al-Tafsir al-Saghir): A concise exposition highlighting the essential meanings, linguistic dimensions, and spiritual indications (isharat) of the Mother of the Book (Umm al-Kitab).
2. The Medium Commentary (Al-Tafsir al-Wasat): A balanced treatment combining linguistic and juristic analysis with insights into the deeper spiritual realities (haqa’iq) conveyed by the surah.
3. The Large Commentary (Al-Tafsir al-Kabir): A comprehensive and detailed work exploring grammar, rhetoric (balaghah), theology (ʿaqidah), jurisprudence (fiqh), and profound insights into spiritual discipline (suluk) and Sufism (tasawwuf).

His Sharh al-Asma’ al-Husna (Commentary on the Beautiful Names of Allah) further complements these works, particularly because Surat al-Fatiha prominently invokes and reflects upon the divine names and attributes: Allah, Rabb, al-Rahman, al-Rahim, and Malik.

Ibn ʿAjiba’s Tafsir Methodology

Ibn ʿAjiba’s approach to Quranic exegesis integrates two complementary dimensions:

• Exoteric Commentary (Tafsir al-Zahir): Grounded in Arabic grammar, lexicography, the canonical qira’at, and established juristic interpretations across the Sunni schools of law.
• Spiritual Allusions (Al-Isharat / Al-Tafsir al-Ishari): Drawing out deeper reflections, moral lessons, and spiritual states (ahwal) intended to purify the heart and bring the servant closer to Allah, while remaining consistent with the apparent meaning (zahir) of the divine text.

The publication of all three levels of Ibn ʿAjiba’s commentaries on Surat al-Fatiha, together with his Sharh Asma’ Allah al-Husna, from verified primary manuscripts represents a significant contribution to the study and preservation of his intellectual and spiritual legacy. The first two commentaries are published here for the first time, while the third, although previously published, suffered from numerous editorial errors. This edition restores these important works in a more reliable form and makes the full breadth of Ibn ʿAjiba’s approach to Surat al-Fatiha accessible to scholars and students alike.
