This short essay is adopted from a sermon that was delivered by the author. In it the Sheikh discusses the seriousness of committing sins and the effects that they have upon us. He highlights the point that every time a disaster strikes us we are quick to conclude that it was due to political, economic or some other materialistic reason. However the author very clearly suggests that we aught to look towards our own sins first, since calamities befall us as a result of them. Plenty of verses are quoted from the Qur?an to substantiate this argument.

Both Jewish and Islamic sources relate the story of the first known sin in the universe, i.e., Satan refusing to obey God’s command to bow down to Adam. In the present volume, Dr. Dirks explores both Jewish and Islamic sources on the first sin, compares and contrasts them, and identifies the underlying root cause behind Satan’s refusal to bow down to Adam, which was arrogance.

This is the first English translation of the book Sharh Hadeeth Maa Dhi'baan Jaai'aan... written by the great scholar Ibn Rajab al-Hanbalee (d.795H) in explanation of the saying of the Prophet (SAW)

'Two hungry wolves let loose among sheep are not more harmful than a person's craving after wealth and status is to his Deen.'

An excellent book, warning us about the dangers of expending our energies in chasing after the transitory things of this world at the expense of the rewards of the Hereafter. it shows the correct perspective that a believer should have of this world in comparison to the Hereafter which is especially important in this age when the people's visions have become so blurred and their priorities mixed up.
