This is the story of Dr. Ang Swee Chai, a Penang-born orthopaedic surgeon, and her flight to war-torn Lebanon in 1982 to treat the wounded and dying. This new edition, twenty years after the Zionist terrorism in Shabra and Shatila which killed thousands of Palestinian civilians, is a tribute to the ongoing struggle against Zionist occupation in the Holy Lands.
Ibn Khaldun, the fourteenth century Arab historiographer and historian, is viewed as a founder of modern historiography, sociology and economics. He lived during a turbulent part of history, and out of his experiences, he “conceived and created a philosophy of history that was undoubtedly the greatest work ever created by a man of intelligence...”. This work tells of the period of unrest in Ibn Khaldun’s life marked by political rivalries. It is during this turbulent period which provided him with the opportunity to write the Muqaddimah (or Prolegomena), earning him an immortal place among historians, sociologists and philosophers. The author of this biographical piece, Mohammad Abdullah Enan (1896-1986) was one of the Arab world's most renowned contemporary historians.
Essays on Islamicate Societies, the US, and Israel
Usul al-Fiqh or Islamic jurisprudence is a subject which is replete with subtleties that challenge even the most intelligent minds. The author has simplified the subject to serve the needs of the non-specialists. However the discussion is thorough and characterized with academic rigour. This work will be a significant addition to the text books available on Islamic jurisprudence in English.
The recent decades have witnessed a strong assertion of Islamic identity. One of its manifestations is the insistence on the part of Muslims that all institutions of life should be brought in conformity with Islamic principles. In this work, the author attempts to spell out the Islamic principles on which business enterprise should be based specially in the area of partnership. In this exercise, he displays a strikingly acute awareness of Islamic laws on the subject. This, however, is matched by an equally striking awareness of the forms of business organization in vogue in the contemporary world. The work represents a serious scholarly effort to sort out complicated questions such as those mentioned above, to enunciate Islamic principles relative to business enterprise, and to apply them in the changed context of present-day business.
As the forces of global Christian Fundamentalism are on the march, the Muslim world is looking increasingly vulnerable. The Cross and the Crescent is a pioneering study, filling a strategic intellectual void by initiating a Muslim tradition of the scientific study of the West.
This book presents usul al-fiqh, or Islamic legal theory, as comprising three major theories or methodologies. Each had a distinct function to perform in the development of Islamic law. The first theory is shown to be based on the operation of general principles and the analytical method, the methodology of the second incorporates strict interpretation and analogy, while the third theory is based on the purposes of the Islamic shari'ah. The book presents the content of Islamic legal theory in a manner that reflects the traditional approach, but takes into account the needs of the modern lawyer, judge and scholar.
